My name is Melissa. I’m currently thru-hiking the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada. I plan to write and post photos of my journey on this site along with my instagram.
I am 19 years old, born and raised in Upland, California. I went to Upland High School, where I was (not your average) homecoming queen. I bet no one expected their homecoming queen to later be a smelly, dirt loving, plant powered, long distance backpacker… But here I am!
How I got into long distance backpacking:
Right out of high school I decided to save all of the money I could and get out of Upland for a while. This brought me to a month and a half long road trip, where I visited 10 states, and 20 national parks with only the company of my dog, Ripley.
One of the National Parks I stopped at was Crater Lake in Oregon (Which later on lead to my interest in the PCT). While waiting for my clothes to wash at the campground, three mangled girls about my age came and plopped their big heavy packs on the table next to me. They went inside and later came out freshly showered, carrying packages full of food to resupply their packs, with the biggest smiles on their faces. They sat next to another man at the table and began telling him what they were up to. Too shy to join the conversation, I sat and listened as they explained that they were hiking the Pacific Crest Trail! After hearing their stories and experiences on the trail, I knew I had to do it. As soon as I got home, I started my research on backpacking, bought gear with the money I had left and hiked the 40 mile California Riding and Hiking Trail through Joshua Tree National Park, where I fell in love with backpacking. I set my mind to thru hike the Pacific Crest Trail, which is the first of many trails I have ahead of me!
